When considering what use this site might have, one thing that kept tugging at me was the prospect of writing. In the very private studio practice I've maintained over the past decade—with varying degrees of regularity and focus—there have been several recurring areas of interest, lines of inquiry, and (at-times muffled) themes.
These have been crosscurrents, intersecting in various ways. They surface repeatedly, not just in the work itself, but in daily life, often abruptly while I'm engaged in entirely unrelated activities, or in the small hours between them. Through all of this, they have maintained a murky quality, as though ever-present, but always just out of view and not yet fully formed.
Given that these recurrences have not dissipated, but rather have gained in their sense of being central, it seemed prudent to use this site as a space to begin writing about them.
My relationship with writing is conflicted. In truth, I find it painfully difficult and requiring a deep sort of solitude. But, when done with focus and persistence, writing has always proven to be a powerful tool to wrest legibility and meaning from what is otherwise a continuous murmur of formless feelings.
As I began jotting down an initial list of topics, I was quickly surprised by their number—once again made aware of writing's ability to pull things into focus.
The list here will likely grow, and the amount of writing dedicated to each topic will likely vary. It's probable that the writings will be added to and amended at will and without notice.
These writings will not be intended to act as any kind of manifesto. And I don't hold any illusions that they will be of much use to anyone else. My intention here is simply to grapple with and instantiate these ideas in a way that is honest and personal, and in a format that can be referred back to easily.
This act of writing will thus be one of laying groundwork, and the words will live here as a plane of reference against which the work itself can be considered, and alongside which it can continue to evolve.
